Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Stout trees 10–12 m tall, trunk up to 45 cm in diameter, wood whitish green, soft, sappy, bark brown or gray, smooth.

Stems: Branches stiff, ascending.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, usually clustered toward the ends of the branches. Blades oblong or elliptic–oblong, 5–12 cm long, 3–6 cm wide. Apex acute or obtuse. Base acute or obtuse. Upper surfaces glabrous to sparsely whitish pubescent; lower surfaces sparsely to densely whitish pubescent; Blades seasonally deciduous, relatively thick, chartaceous. Margins entire. Petioles 2–5 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers numerous on short axillary spurs, pedicels 4–10 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, pedicellate. Calyx 4-lobed, 6–11 mm long, margins dentate. Corolla greenish yellow, 4-lobed, the tube scarcely exserted from calyx, 4-lobed, the lobes pubescent externally, glabrous within. Stamens 4; filaments extremely short to absent; anthers linear, acute, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-celled, ovoid; ovules numerous; style short; stigma 2-lobed.

Fruit: Berries orangish red; succulent; depressed globose to oblong; 6–8 mm long; enclosed by the calyx. Seeds irregular; seed coat pitted; embryo curved; endosperm present.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Dry to occasionally mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 550–1,830 m.
